Join the Sharon Historical Society, in collaboration with The BLOCK by Nova Destinations, as we host “Suffrage and Women's Rights: Cocktails & History,” a unique, lecture with an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage included. Author, historian, and civil servant Doug Veverka explores the history of the Women’s Suffrage Movement nationally and its ties to Pennsylvania. In July of 1848, a young Charlotte Woodward stood in the stuffy and crowded Wesleyan Church to hear the reading of The Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments. From the podium, in a resolute voice, Elizabeth Cady Stanton proclaimed, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These words echoed through the sanctuary, leaving Miss Woodward mesmerized and forever changed. She would be the only signer of that Declaration to witness the ratification of the 19th Amendment seventy-two years later. The first formal women’s rights convention began a movement that would take several generations to attain, and all generations to preserve. The struggle for half of the country’s population to gain equal rights under the law, including the vote, proved a monumental endeavor. This presentation narrates their service, struggle, and sacrifice for the benefit, and betterment, of the people and the nation.
This lecture is provided by author, historian, and civil servant Doug Veverka. Veverka believes a great story is always worth telling, and that understanding history teaches mankind to face the present and prepare for the future. He finds solace in the bravery and fortitude shown by those who have come before him. Doug is married to an extraordinary woman, Tammy; and together they raised two insightful, loving children, Megan and Dominic. His passion for presenting history is rooted in an exchange of ideas in a shared community experience.
