Sharon Historical Society announces spring guided tours of Buhl Mansion

SHARON, Pa. (WFMJ) - If you have ever wondered how the well-to-do lived during America’s Gilded Age, now is your chance.

The Sharon Historical Society has scheduled a series of guided history tours at the Buhl Mansion Guesthouse & Spa throughout May. The events mark the first time the organization has offered spring tours of the landmark, which was built by industrialist Frank H. Buhl at 422 East State Street.

The tours will provide access to the home’s interior and gardens. According to the historical society, the schedule includes Sunday sessions on May 3 and May 17 at noon and 2 p.m. Thursday tours are set for May 7, May 14, and May 21 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Frank H. Buhl, the founder of the Sharon Steel Corporation, commissioned the residence for his wife, Julia Forker, following their marriage in 1888. Construction of the Richardsonian Romanesque structure began in 1890 and reached completion in 1896. Youngstown architect Charles Owsley designed the building, which is characterized by its stone exterior and castle-like features.

The Buhl family is noted for its philanthropy in the Shenango Valley. Their contributions led to the establishment of the region's first hospital, the Buhl-Henderson Library, and Buhl Park. The park remains notable for housing the only free public golf course in the United States.

Following the deaths of the Buhls, the property went through several ownership changes and periods of neglect. In 1996, Jim and Donna Winner purchased the mansion and began a restoration process to return the building to its original condition. It currently operates as a guesthouse and spa.

Organizers stated that reservations are required for all tour dates, as space is limited. Interested parties may book through the Sharon Historical Society website or by contacting the organization via phone. Attendance fees support the historical society's efforts to preserve local heritage.
