  • Sharon Answers the Call

    Europe was engulfed in war after the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914. In the following year, the Shenango Valley paused to thank its “First Citizens,” Frank and Julia Buhl, for their most generous gift—Buhl Farm Park—which became a treasured escape from wartime worries. Sharon Steel, Carnegie Steel, and Savage Arms Co. stepped up to support the war “over there” by producing armaments, including the Lewis machine gun. The call for volunteers and several drafts summoned Sharon’s bravest to war. Then, Sharon watched the storm clouds gather as the 1918 influenza epidemic killed those at home. The war years rushed by—Red Cross work, Liberty Loan drives, service stripes, and, alas, some gold stars, and finally the glorious first Armistice Day. Author and historian Taylor Galaska discovers the remarkable history of Sharon’s perseverance and pride during the Great War, on the battlefield, and the home front.

  • Taylor Galaska, President of the Board of Directors of the Sharon Historical Society, is a Sharon native with a lifelong passion for local history. He has served on the Society’s Board of Directors since 2014, joining at the age of 15. A graduate of Westminster College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and professional sales, Galaska has dedicated much of his work to preserving and sharing the history of the Shenango Valley. He is currently researching the life of John Stevenson Jr. for an upcoming biography on the noted industrialist and philanthropist. This is his seventh book with Shenango Heritage Press.
